The EP-CAMS4400 is a complete camshaft synchronizer for the Mitsubishi 2.0L 4G63 engine -- the legendary turbocharged four-cylinder used in the Eclipse, Galant, Eagle Talon, and Plymouth Laser. The 4G63 is one of the most celebrated tuner and performance engines in automotive history, and the camshaft synchronizer is a critical component in its EFI cam reference system.

The 4G63-powered Eclipse, Galant, Eagle Talon, and Plymouth Laser were among the most popular all-wheel-drive turbocharged performance cars of the early 1990s. The cam synchronizer on the 4G63 provides the cam position reference to the EFI ECU -- critical for both ignition timing and injection phasing on the turbocharged applications where timing accuracy directly affects boost response and knock prevention.

The EP-CAMS4400 replaces OEM references MD193497 and MD100894 -- the primary Mitsubishi and cross-reference part numbers for the 4G63 cam synchronizer. Ships with cam position sensor.

Key features

Mitsubishi 4G63 -- the legendary turbo four-cylinder

The 4G63 powers the original Eclipse GST/GSX, Galant VR-4, Eagle Talon TSi, and Plymouth Laser RS. EP-CAMS4400 serves this iconic JDM-heritage engine.

Eclipse, Galant, Eagle Talon, Plymouth Laser coverage

Covers all four North American vehicles using the Mitsubishi 4G63 in the 1989-1994 DSM era.

Replaces MD193497 / MD100894

Primary Mitsubishi OEM references for the 4G63 cam synchronizer in these applications.

Cam sensor critical for turbo timing accuracy

On turbocharged 4G63 applications, accurate cam position is critical for boost timing -- a failing cam synchronizer on a boosted 4G63 directly impacts performance and knock resistance.

Installation guide

The Mitsubishi 4G63 cam synchronizer is located at the rear of the engine, driven by the exhaust camshaft on DOHC applications. Disconnect battery. Set engine to TDC on cylinder 1. Disconnect cam position sensor connector. Remove the synchronizer hold-down and withdraw old unit. Install EP-CAMS4400 in the same orientation, ensuring correct engagement with the camshaft drive. Reconnect sensor connector. Clear fault codes. Note: on DOHC 4G63 applications, the synchronizer drive engages the exhaust cam -- consult the Mitsubishi workshop manual for correct installation procedure.

Founded in 1999 in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, EP manufactures precision automotive engine management components serving the global aftermarket. Our Camshaft Synchronizer range addresses one of the most common failure modes in Ford EFI vehicles of the 1990s -- cam synchronizer failure causing no-start conditions, rough idle, CEL codes P0340/P0341, and fuel injection timing errors. Each EP unit is engineered as a direct OEM replacement for the original Motorcraft synchronizer assembly.

EP ignition distributor manufacturing facility

Wholesale buyers, Amazon resellers, and automotive service chains source directly from our factory, accessing OEM-quality camshaft synchronizer assemblies at factory-direct pricing. OEM branding and private-label packaging are available for qualifying volumes. EP is part of the Ever-Power Group, also producing sheave pulleys and a comprehensive range of mechanical transmission products.

Frequently asked questions

What is a camshaft synchronizer and how is it different from a distributor?
A camshaft synchronizer is a cam-driven position sensor assembly that replaced the traditional distributor on many Ford EFI engines of the 1990s. Like a distributor, it is driven by the camshaft and mounted in a similar location in the engine block -- but instead of routing high voltage to spark plugs, it contains a camshaft position sensor (CPS) that sends a digital signal to the EFI computer (ECM/PCM). The ECM uses this signal to precisely time fuel injection pulses and ignition firing. On these vehicles, ignition is handled by a separate coil-pack system, not by the synchronizer itself. The synchronizer provides only the camshaft timing reference signal -- but if this signal fails, the engine will not start or will run very poorly with CEL codes P0340, P0341, P0342, or P0343.
Does the EP-CAMS4400 ship with the cam position sensor and timing alignment tool?
Yes. The EP-CAMS4400 ships as a complete assembly including the synchronizer housing, the integrated camshaft position sensor pre-installed in the housing, and a timing alignment tool. The alignment tool is a C-shaped or window-type tool that clips onto the synchronizer during installation to confirm the rotor is positioned correctly relative to TDC before tightening the hold-down bolt. Using the alignment tool is critical -- reinstalling without it can result in a mistimed cam signal that causes immediate engine fault codes and poor running conditions. No additional components are required for direct OEM replacement.
Does the EP-CAMS4400 fit both turbocharged and naturally aspirated 4G63 applications?
Yes. The 2.0L 4G63 engine in both turbocharged (Eclipse GST/GSX, Talon TSi, Galant VR-4) and naturally aspirated (Eclipse GS, Talon) configurations uses the same cam synchronizer specification covered by EP-CAMS4400 (OEM MD193497/MD100894). The cam synchronizer interfaces with the camshaft drive, not the turbocharger, so the turbo/NA distinction does not affect synchronizer compatibility.
What are the symptoms of a failing camshaft synchronizer?
The most common symptoms of a failing camshaft synchronizer include: Check Engine Light with diagnostic trouble codes P0340 (Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction), P0341, P0342, or P0343; intermittent no-start conditions where the engine cranks but will not fire; rough or erratic idle quality; hesitation or stumbling under acceleration; poor fuel economy from incorrect injection timing; and stalling at operating temperature. The synchronizer seal can also fail, allowing oil to leak around the housing. On Ford 4.0L OHV V6 applications, the synchronizer is a known high-failure-rate component, and many mechanics recommend proactive replacement on high-mileage Explorer and Ranger 4.0L engines.
How do I install the camshaft synchronizer correctly?
Correct installation of a camshaft synchronizer requires setting the engine to TDC (Top Dead Centre) on the number one cylinder compression stroke before removing the old synchronizer. Mark the position of the synchronizer housing and rotor on the old unit before removal so you can confirm the new unit goes in at the same orientation. After installing the new synchronizer, use the included alignment tool to verify the rotor position matches the correct timing mark before tightening the hold-down bolt. On Ford applications, the leading edge of the rotor's C-shaped vane must align with the timing mark visible through the synchronizer window when the engine is at TDC. Tighten the hold-down to factory torque specification. Failure to use the alignment tool results in a mistimed cam signal that immediately sets fault codes and causes rough running.
How do I order the EP-CAMS4400 for export or wholesale?
EP supports single-unit orders for market sampling, carton quantities for repair shops and parts counters, and container-volume wholesale orders. Standard production lead time is 15-30 days. OEM branding and private-label packaging are available for qualifying volumes. Contact our team via the inquiry form or WhatsApp for pricing and availability.
