The critical distinction between the EP-11 and the EP-289VWMG (the standard 289/302 Pro Billet unit) is the distributor gear material: the EP-11 uses a steel gear compatible with the factory hydraulic roller camshafts introduced in Ford 302/5.0L engines from approximately 1985 onward, while the EP-289VWMG uses an iron gear suited to flat-tappet applications.

Ford's factory hydraulic roller camshaft introduced in the 5.0L High Output engine requires a steel distributor gear rather than the traditional iron gear used with flat-tappet cam grinds. Using an iron gear distributor with a steel roller cam results in rapid cam gear wear that can destroy the camshaft within a few thousand miles. The EP-11 is the correct choice for any 289 or 302 build -- street performance or race -- that uses a factory 5.0L HO roller cam, an aftermarket hydraulic roller camshaft, or an EFI-equipped 302/5.0L engine with the factory roller valvetrain.

The EP-11 requires an external ignition box and external coil. For Fox body Mustang 5.0L builds running MSD or Holley ignition systems, the EP-11 provides billet-quality trigger accuracy with the correct gear specification for roller cam engines.

Installation guide

Verify your 302/5.0L engine has a roller camshaft before installing EP-11. Factory 5.0L HO engines (1985-1995) use hydraulic roller cams requiring the steel gear EP-11. Flat-tappet 289 and early 302 applications should use EP-289VWMG (iron gear). Disconnect battery. Lower EP-11 into 302/5.0L engine position. Connect magnetic pickup wires to external ignition box per box wiring diagram. Connect box to external coil. Set base timing. Approximately 45-60 minutes.

What is a Pro Billet distributor and how does it differ from HEI and Ready-to-Run?
A Pro Billet distributor is the highest-performance tier in the distributor range. Its housing is CNC-machined from 6061-T6 aerospace-grade billet aluminum for superior dimensional accuracy and strength compared to cast-aluminum housings used in HEI and standard Ready-to-Run distributors. Pro Billet distributors do NOT include an internal ignition module -- they require an external high-output ignition box (such as MSD 6A, 6AL, 7AL-2, 8-Plus, or equivalent) to function. This makes them unsuitable for simple street swaps but ideal for serious performance and race applications where the ignition box provides rev limiting, timing retard, multiple spark discharge, and other advanced functions. HEI distributors are fully self-contained (coil and module inside the cap) requiring only one wire. Ready-to-Run distributors include an internal module but need an external coil. Pro Billet distributors need both an external ignition box AND an external coil.
What ignition box is compatible with the EP-11?
The EP-11 Pro Billet distributor is compatible with any high-output external ignition box that accepts a magnetic pickup trigger signal. This includes MSD 6A, 6AL, 6AL-2, 7AL-2, 8-Plus, and 10-series ignition controls, as well as equivalent units from Holley, Mallory, Crane, and FAST. The ignition box must be connected between the distributor magnetic pickup and the external ignition coil. Do NOT connect the distributor directly to a coil without an ignition box -- the Pro Billet distributor has no internal module to produce the trigger signal the coil requires. Consult the ignition box manufacturer's wiring diagram for the correct connection procedure for magnetic-pickup distributors.
How do I know if my Ford 302 needs the steel gear EP-11 or the iron gear EP-289VWMG?
If your engine is a factory Ford 302 5.0L High Output (introduced 1985) or a 5.0L used in Fox body Mustang, F-150, or Bronco from 1985-1995, it has a factory hydraulic roller camshaft and requires the steel gear EP-11. Any aftermarket hydraulic roller camshaft also requires a steel gear. Flat-tappet camshafts -- both hydraulic and solid -- can use either steel or iron gear distributors, though an iron gear (EP-289VWMG) is traditional for flat-tappet applications. If you are unsure which cam your engine has, the factory shop manual for your vehicle year will confirm whether it is a roller or flat-tappet application.
Can the mechanical advance be locked out for full-race applications?
Yes. The adjustable mechanical advance mechanism on EP Pro Billet distributors can be locked out for all-out racing applications where all timing advance is managed exclusively by the external ignition box. To lock out the advance, install the supplied stop bushings in their maximum-retard position and set the initial timing at the distributor to your required base timing figure. All additional advance -- both curve and total -- is then dialled in at the MSD or equivalent ignition box. This gives the tuner precise control over the advance curve that mechanical spring-and-weight systems cannot match. For street and mild performance applications, the mechanical advance is typically left operational and the advance curve is tailored using the supplied spring and bushing sets.
