3535 Taper Lock Bushings

You may have heard of the bushing, but what exactly is it? The bushing is the interface between the two components. It dampens vibrations and absorbs energy transmitted through it. Below are some examples of the bushing. Some common types and uses are listed below. Let's start with the most common types. If your vehicle's steering wheel won't move, you may need a new bushing. If this is the case, you should check for proper braking and alignment.
A bushing is a bearing that reduces friction between rotating or sliding shafts. These types of bearings often rely on plastic, babbitt, or oil films to reduce friction. They are essential for machinery with sliding and rotating shafts. Bushings can also be used as alignment fixtures in drilling operations. Despite their versatility, bushings are not the most expensive type of bearing. Here are some common types and how they can help improve machine performance. Tapered locking bushings are designed to mechanically connect two or more shafts and have tapered surfaces. They provide flexibility between primary and secondary components and feature ISO-compliant threads and keyways. QTL tapered bushings are mounted on tapered hubs and QTL tapered bushings are mounted on keyways. Both styles are machined to ISO standards. The dimensions of the tapered locking bushing are defined by four digits, including the flange. The first two digits of the size represent the maximum bore diameter and the last two digits are the length of the bushing. For example, a 1.5" diameter tapered locking bushing is 1-1/2". Similarly, metric bore diameters are given by placing "MM" after the metric dimension. Additionally, the tapered locking bushings are flush with the tapered pulleys and sprockets.

Installation

1. Clean all oil, dirt, and paint from the shaft, bushing holes, bushing exterior, and bores of components (sprockets, pulleys, etc.).
2. Insert the bushing into the assembly. Match hole patterns, not threaded holes (each hole is threaded on one side only).
3. Thread the set screw or cap screw into the half-threaded hole shown below. Install the assembly on the shaft.
4. Alternately set the torque setting or cap screw* to the recommended torque setting in the table below.
5. Fill all unoccupied holes with grease.

Removal

1. Remove any retaining or cap screws.
2. Insert the set screw or cap screw into the above hole.
3. To reinstall, complete all five (5) installation instructions.

The Taper-Lock bushing is a keyed bearing with an 8-degree taper bore. It mounts in the hub with internal screws and provides a tighter fit than traditional flanged bushings. For proper installation, it is important to select the correct hub and shaft diameter for the assembly. Proper installation procedures are also important to prevent bushing damage.
When choosing a Taper-Lock bushing, first decide which type you need. Some tapered locking bushings have different flange sizes. Flanges are standard sizes, but actual hole sizes may differ from the chart. Also, if the brake is mounted on the shaft, the keyway may not be needed. In this case, a keyway should be used.
