U2 Split Taper Bushing

Split tapered bushings are flanged bushings. Split tapered bushings are used for pulleys, pulleys, sprockets, and gear pulleys. Split tapered bushings reduce the need to drill parts to size, ideally reducing on-hand requirements and allowing shaft size changes if necessary. The barrel of the split conical bushing is split into two places and is keyed to the shaft. The outer diameter of the barrel is also keyed to the drive part. The advantage of the split tapered bushing is that it will hold even if the fasteners are loose.

Installation

1. Make sure the bushing cone and interior of the driven product are clean and free of anti-seize lubricant.
2. Place the bushing into the sprocket or other part type that accepts bushings.
3. Loosely place the cap screws into the pull-up holes. The bushing remains loose to ensure a slip fit on the shaft.
4. Using the key on the shaft, slide the sprocket or other part type to the desired position on the shaft. Make sure the heads of the cap screws are accessible.
5. Align the sprockets or part types, alternately and incrementally tighten the screws until they are taut. Do not use extensions on the wrench handle, and do not allow sprockets or parts to be pulled out and contact the bushing flange. There should be a gap between the bushing flange and the sprocket at this point to ensure that the gap does not close.

Removal

1. Loosen and remove cap screws.
2. Insert the cap screws into the threaded removal holes.
3. Tighten the inserted screws until the sprocket or other part type is loose on the shaft.
4. Remove sprocket/part type from the shaft.

Application of Split Taper Bushings

Low voltage bushings in large generator transformers are an example of bushing applications that present different challenges. They must carry a total of 14 000 A on a single phase. This is not possible unless the casing is protected by a large central copper cylinder. This is a much thicker casing than the high voltage casing. That means it needs to be more protective.
Rubber bushings are another popular type. These are commonly used in blowers and fans, and they are designed to withstand vibration while minimizing noise. Their ability to absorb shock is another benefit of rubber bushings. While their use in these devices is fairly new, their widespread use in automobile manufacturing is a testament to their versatility and durability. And, of course, they're used in a variety of other contexts besides car manufacturing. If you have a high or low voltage power system, rubber bushings may be the ideal solution.
