Installation and Function

The Swing Gearbox is installed on the excavator's superstructure and works in tandem with the slew ring. When the operator controls the joystick to rotate the superstructure, the hydraulic motor sends fluid to the Swing Gearbox, which transmits the power to the pinion gear. The pinion gear meshes with the internal gear, which is fixed to the slew ring, causing the excavator to rotate. Here's an image of its location:

As the pinion gear rotates, it also rotates the carrier. The carrier holds the planetary gears, which are in turn connected to the motor shaft. When the motor shaft rotates, it drives the hydraulic pump, and the cycle repeats.
