Placing bushings in vehicle suspension systems

There are several different types of bushings, and their placement in a vehicle's suspension system can vary widely. Most are made from natural rubber, but in some cases, polyurethane or synthetic compounds are used. Natural rubber bushings are highly compliant and resistant to permanent deformation, making them ideal for many applications. Also, they are very durable and do not require lubrication.
The MacPherson-style front suspension uses rubber bushings. When cornering, these components transmit cornering forces to the vehicle, causing them to lose camber and other alignment characteristics. Despite the many benefits of this type of suspension, the rubber bushings can lose alignment under cornering and braking forces. Heavy braking can also cause bushings to deform, resulting in increased wear.

Control arm bushings are one of the most common bushing replacements because they connect the car's suspension and frame. Bushings wear out over time and bend in accidents. On average, replacing the four control arm bushings costs between $200 and $670. Labor and parts should cost between $100 and $250. Mechanic fees may be higher or lower than these estimates, but the total cost of repairs should not exceed $1,000.

Standard Mounting

1. Make sure the cone on the bushing and the inside of the driven product is clean and free of oil or anti-seize lubricant.
2. Slide QD bushing on a shaft, flange end first, then assemble key.
3. Place the QD bushing on the shaft. Use only a standard Allen key to tighten the set screw on the key (hand-tight). Don't push too hard.
4. Slide the large end of the sprocket or other part taper hole into place over the cone, aligning the drilled bolt holes on the sprocket or other part with the taper holes in the bushing flange. Then assemble the pull-up bolt and lock washer.
5. Tighten the pull-up bolts alternately and evenly to the tightening levels shown in the torque table below. Do not use extensions on wrench handles. There should now be a gap between the face of the sprocket or other part hub and the flange of the QD bushing to ensure an excellent tapered grip and press fit. NOTE: This gap must not be closed.
