Rodless cylinders have no rod, only a fairly extended piston. Cable cylinders retain openings at one or each ends, but pass a flexible cable as an alternative to a rod. This cable features a smooth plastic jacket for sealing purposes. Not surprisingly, a single cable needs to be kept in tension. Other rodless cylinders shut off both ends, coupling the piston either magnetically or mechanically to an actuator that runs along the outside in the cylinder. Within the magnetic style, the cylinder is thin-walled and of the non-magnetic materials, the cylinder is often a strong magnet, and pulls along a magnetic traveller to the outdoors.

From the mechanical sort, part with the cylinder extends for the outside via a slot cut down the length with the cylinder. The slot is then sealed by versatile metal sealing bands about the inside (to avoid gasoline escape) and outdoors (to prevent contamination).
