The EP-FD04 is a complete electronic distributor for the Ford 5.0L (302 CID) V8 in 1985 EFI applications, including the Ford Bronco, early Mustang GT, and F-series trucks. The 1985 model year represents the early period of Ford's EFI conversion for the 302 V8, with the EEC-IV computer providing fuel and ignition management through the TFI distributor system.

Distributor gear material is critical for this application: the EP-FD04 uses an iron distributor gear, correct for the flat-tappet camshafts used in virtually all Ford 5.0L 302 engines through 1992. Using a steel gear distributor in a flat-tappet application will destroy the camshaft distributor drive gear. The iron gear is correct for 1985 Bronco, Mustang, and F-series applications with stock and most performance camshafts.

Note: the 1994-1995 Mustang GT 5.0L uses a hydraulic roller camshaft requiring a steel gear distributor (see EP-FD22). The EP-FD04 is for 1985 and other flat-tappet 302 applications. Ships with TFI module, cap, and rotor.

Frequently asked questions

What are the symptoms of a failing Ford EFI distributor or TFI module?
The most common Ford EFI distributor failure is the TFI (Thick Film Ignition) module overheating and failing. Classic symptoms include: engine starts cold but stalls after reaching operating temperature, cools down and restarts, then stalls again -- the characteristic TFI heat-related failure pattern. Other symptoms include rough idle, loss of power at high RPM, intermittent no-start conditions, and a check engine code for the PIP (Profile Ignition Pickup) signal from the distributor. The distributor body itself can also wear -- shaft play, worn drive gear, or deteriorated seals allowing oil contamination of the internal components. When the TFI module fails, replacing the complete distributor assembly (including the new TFI module) is more reliable than replacing the TFI module alone on a worn distributor housing.
Does the EP-FD04 ship with the TFI module, cap, and rotor?
Yes. The EP-FD04 ships as a complete plug-and-play assembly. For EFI-era Ford distributors (1984 and later), the unit includes the distributor body, TFI (Thick Film Ignition) module, distributor cap, and rotor. For Duraspark-era distributors (1975-1983), the unit includes the distributor body, cap, and rotor with the magnetic pickup assembly. For classic-era FE distributors (pre-1975), the unit includes the distributor body, cap, and rotor. No additional ignition components are required for direct OEM replacement. The unit is ready to install after transfer of the vacuum advance hose and spark plug wires from the old distributor.
How do I confirm my 1985 Ford 302 V8 needs an iron gear distributor and not a steel gear?
The Ford 302 V8 in stock and most performance applications through 1992 uses a hydraulic flat-tappet camshaft, requiring an iron distributor gear. To confirm: look under the valve covers for a roller lifter retainer plate (a stamped steel plate holding the roller lifters in pairs). If you see a retainer plate, you have a roller cam requiring a steel gear. If there is no retainer plate and lifters appear as smooth cylinders, you have a flat-tappet cam requiring an iron gear. For the 1985 Bronco and Mustang GT with stock engines, iron gear (EP-FD04) is correct.
What is the correct distributor gear material for my Ford V8 application?
Distributor gear material is critical for Ford V8 applications. Using the wrong gear will rapidly destroy the camshaft distributor drive gear. The rule is: iron gear for flat-tappet camshafts (standard in most Ford V8 engines through 1993); steel gear for hydraulic roller camshafts (introduced from 1994 in most Ford applications, and in some 1985+ 5.0L engines with factory roller cams). Specifically: all Ford 5.8L 351W engines through 1993 use flat-tappet cams and require iron gear distributors. The 1994-96 5.8L and the 1994-95 Mustang 5.0L use hydraulic roller cams and require steel gear distributors. When in doubt, check for a roller lifter retainer plate visible under the valve covers -- its presence confirms a roller cam requiring a steel gear distributor.
What is the difference between distributor-mounted TFI and remote-mounted TFI?
Ford's TFI (Thick Film Ignition) module appears in two configurations: distributor-mounted, where the module clips directly onto the side of the distributor housing; and remote-mounted, where the module bolts to a separate heat sink bracket away from the distributor. Early EFI distributors (approximately 1985-1991) typically use distributor-mounted TFI. Later applications (particularly 1992-1996 F-series and Bronco) commonly use remote-mounted TFI to reduce heat exposure to the module. Additionally, there are two TFI module generations: the gray push-start module (1985-1993) and the black CCD (Computer Controlled Dwell) module (1994-95 Mustang and some later applications). The gray and black modules are NOT interchangeable. EP distributors ship with the correct module type for the listed application.
Do I need to reset the timing after replacing the Ford EFI distributor?
For most Ford EFI applications (1984 and later with EEC-IV), the base timing is computer-controlled and not adjusted with a timing light after distributor replacement -- provided the distributor is installed in the same orientation as the original. Mark the rotor position and housing alignment carefully before removing the old distributor, and install the new unit in the identical position. For 1983 EEC-III and earlier Duraspark-equipped vehicles, base timing IS field-adjustable and requires setting with a timing light after installation. For classic FE era vehicles (pre-1975), timing must always be set with a timing light after distributor replacement. Consult the factory service manual for your specific vehicle year and engine.
How do I order the EP-FD04 for export or wholesale?

OEM branding and private-label packaging are available for qualifying volumes. Contact our team via the inquiry form or WhatsApp for pricing and availability.
