The EP-4L is a Pro Billet race distributor for Chevrolet SBC and BBC V8 engines configured specifically for mechanical advance lockout -- the dedicated race configuration where all timing advance is managed exclusively by the external ignition box and the distributor delivers a fixed base timing signal with no self-advancing mechanism. This configuration eliminates the variable of mechanical advance spring and weight behavior from the ignition timing equation, giving the racer or tuner complete and precise control over the entire advance curve through the ignition box programming.

The lockout configuration is the choice of serious drag racers, circle track builders, and road course competitors who run MSD 6AL-2, 7AL-2, 8-Plus, or 10-series ignition controls capable of providing the full advance curve electronically. By removing the mechanical advance from the timing equation, the ignition box can deliver a perfectly consistent advance curve at every RPM point regardless of centrifugal force on the mechanical weights -- eliminating the slight variation in advance delivery that even the best mechanical advance systems exhibit.
