SD QD Type Bushings

A bushing is a cylindrical lining made of flexible material inside a metal housing. The inner squeeze tube of the bushing helps prevent it from being squeezed by the clip. The material also reduces friction and isolates vibration and noise while improving performance. This article discusses some of the most common uses for bushings.

Dismounting

QD bushings are precision machined tapered steel bushings that mount components on the drive shaft. They feature a complete separation of the entire flange and cap screws to hold the assembly in place. They are designed to allow slightly different shaft diameters and are commonly used with timing pulleys and gears. Unlike traditional bushings, QDs do not require keys and are used with gears and pulleys.
When replacing bushings, use a torque wrench to apply the proper torque. Do not over-tighten. Excessive torque can damage the bushing and make it useless. It is recommended to tighten the hardware on each side to prevent over-tightening alternately. However, lubricants, greases, and anti-seize agents should not be used. If you must use these products, ensure they are marked with the correct instructions and do not exceed them.
To install the QD bushing, ensure the flange ends are clean and dry. Remove any oil, grease, or anti-seize lubricant from the QD bushing. Then, place the sprocket on the QD bushing, ensuring the big end of the sprocket is aligned with the flange of the bushing. Bolt the QD bushing.
Another type of QD bushing is called split tapered bushing. It looks similar to a divided tapered bushing but splits twice in the barrel. This separation is essential to ensure that the drive components do not slip off the rotating shaft. If the opening is too small, the QD bushing may cause the barrel OD to fall. Keyways for large hole sizes do not exist or are shallow.

Standard Mounting

1. Make sure the cone on the bushing and the inside of the driven product is clean and free of oil or anti-seize lubricant.
2. Slide QD bushing on a shaft, flange end first, then assemble key.
3. Place the QD bushing on the shaft. Use only a standard Allen key to tighten the set screw on the key (hand-tight). Don't push too hard.
4. Slide the large end of the sprocket or other part taper hole into place over the cone, aligning the drilled bolt holes on the sprocket or other part with the taper holes in the bushing flange. Then assemble the pull-up bolt and lock washer.
5. Tighten the pull-up bolts alternately and evenly to the tightening levels shown in the torque table below. Do not use extensions on wrench handles. There should now be a gap between the face of the sprocket or other part hub and the flange of the QD bushing to ensure an excellent tapered grip and press fit. NOTE: This gap must not be closed.
