What is a Globoid Worm Gear？

Basically, a worm gear is a gearing assembly that rotates against a wheel. The two shafts of a worm gear are normally at right angles. They can be housed in a single unit, or can be combined with other equipment for different speeds and applications.

There are two main types of worm gears. One is a cylindrical worm drive and the other is a globoid worm gear drive.

Compared to the simple cylindrical worm drive, the globoid (or throated) worm design significantly increases the contact area between the worm shaft and the teeth of the gear wheel, and therefore greatly improves load capacity and other performance parameters of the worm drive. Also, the globoid worm shaft is much more aesthetically appealing, in our humble opinion. However, designing a globoid worm is tricky, and designing the matching gear wheel is even trickier.

Globoid Worm Gear Features

The globoid worm gear assembly includes a worm gear and a globoid worm gear that rotates through the worm gear. The worm includes one or more helical gear teeth that engage with gear teeth of the spherical worm gear to transmit rotational motion. The worm gear and globoid worm gear rotate about a vertical axis of rotation.

Compared to conventional worm gears, globoid worm gears are shaped to increase the surface area of their gear teeth. This provides reduced contact pressure and an increased number of gear teeth in engagement, which reduces gear wear and increases the torque that can be transmitted.

The assembly of this globoid worm gear assembly is limited because the worm cannot be assembled on the housing prior to the globoid worm gear, and the globoid worm gear cannot engage the worm by moving it axially into the housing due to interference between the worm and the globoid worm gear.
