The EP-8381 is a 6061-T6 billet aluminum Optispark LT1 distributor for the Chevrolet Camaro Z28 equipped with the fourth-generation LT1 engine (1992-1994). The Optispark is a fundamentally different distributor design from all other GM applications -- it mounts at the front of the engine behind the water pump and uses an optical sensor rather than a magnetic pickup to provide the ignition timing reference signal to the PCM. The factory Optispark housing is made of plastic, which is the primary cause of the well-documented Optispark failure modes: moisture infiltration through deteriorating seals and housing warpage from heat cycling.

The EP-8381 addresses the factory plastic housing's most critical failure mode by using a CNC-machined 6061-T6 billet aluminum housing. The same aerospace-grade aluminum used in the EP Pro Billet performance distributor range provides significantly greater thermal stability and structural integrity than the factory plastic, reducing the risk of seal failure and sensor contamination that is the root cause of most LT1 Optispark ignition problems. The optical sensor, cap, and rotor are included as part of the complete assembly.

The LT1 Optispark is position-critical -- it is driven directly from the crankshaft via the front accessory drive, providing the PCM with a direct crankshaft position reference. The base timing is not field-adjustable; all timing control is handled by the PCM. Replacement requires careful attention to the orientation of the distributor relative to the crankshaft position during installation.

The LT1 Optispark is located at the front of the engine, behind the water pump and serpentine belt system. Access requires removal of the water pump and the serpentine belt drive components. The replacement procedure is significantly more involved than a conventional distributor swap -- typically 3-4 hours for an experienced technician. Key steps: drain cooling system, remove serpentine belt and tensioner, remove water pump, remove old Optispark (note the orientation carefully), install new EP-8381 in the same orientation, reinstall water pump, refill coolant, reconnect all electrical connectors. The PCM handles all timing -- no timing adjustment is required after installation.
