This overrun PTO clutch prevents the transmission of inertial energy to the PTO. When a PTO is disengaged, inertia prevents the shaft from stopping. The PTO shaft on older tractors is often directly coupled to the output side of the transmission. This means that when you coast, the drive wheels are still spinning. While not always enough to stop the spinning equipment, the brakes can't stop the spinning equipment.

Without a PTO overrun clutch, the tractor could double its speed and run into an object. This would be unsafe and potentially damaging. Fortunately, there are various solutions. Slip clutches are another alternative to a PTO overrun clutch. These PTO overrun cltches are a bit different from a slip clutch and are not usually added to tractors cheaply. While a PTO overrun clutch is necessary for standard tractors, there are also those that are designed specifically for non-standard PTO shafts. In such cases, a special ORC is used as a converter. In such a case, the PTO shaft is directly coupled to the output side of the transmission. While coasting, the drive wheels continue to spin through the PTO shaft. The result is that the tractor is unable to stop in time, causing severe damage to the vehicle.

A PTO overrun clutch will prevent power from back-feeding into the transmission, which in turn transmits power to the rear wheels. Without a PTO overrun clutch, the spinning blade assembly can cause the tractor to back-feed power back into the transmission and into the rear wheels. This can lead to a serious accident if it hits an object.
